A Warm and Comfy Local Gastropub Gem Serenely Tucked Away in Newington Green

Mildmay Park is known for being a former railway station and home to an imposing library edifice. But, for foodies and pub lovers, the big attraction is a secret favourite place: the Lady Mildmay

Quietly located at one side of leafy Newington Green, the Mildmay Pub’s spacious inn gives off an ambience of country-side freshness inventively combined with bare elegance. The interiors are charmingly 19th century with perfect spaces for large groups and private diners. The food is irresistibly rustic and south-Mediterranean, with a changing menu every three weeks to ensure ingredients remain seasonal. These gastro pleasures are accompanied by a great selection of ales and red wine carefully sourced from Europe and served by the glass. The gastropub menu is med-leaning, exotic and pocket friendly.

Pamper your appetite with a Venetian style duck ragu, a rare bavette steak or stir your buds with roast chicken complete with leeks and soft polenta, washed down with London Brews or European pilsners like Krusovice, Sagres and Moretti from Mildmay’s well-stocked bar. The sparkly wine choices for guests come from a variety of five rotating ale taps, in addition to home-infused gins and the local summer cup.

Open to the public at 11am daily, this quaint guise of a traditional pub with classic awning and original features has a cosy spot where you can secure a table with wifi – just like working from home.

On warm days, the Lady’s doors are flung open so guests can enjoy the calm and airy atmosphere of the gentle weather. And on frosty days there is a traditional fireplace to curl up next to. You will likely find Mildmay’s resident dog, Sidney, also snuggled close to the fire. The friendly and helpful team that somehow conjures a chilled and truly welcoming mood for guests, also includes Sidney. The staff are clearly committed to your ease and comfort at the inn, subtly eager to please and always with a smiley face, giving you warm tips on menu and wine choices.

Like Sidney, guest’s dogs are allowed inside too. And there are board games like Scrabble to play in-house, although you can also bring your own to play with your dining-group or family. Newington Green’s new queen of hearts’ Sunday lunch is a local favourite, with its tender Yorkshire beef, rich gravy and cauliflower cheese. Also, daily-changing popular weekday lunch specials are enjoyed for £6.

Opened for public pleasure in February 2016 with an open kitchen, Lady Mildmay’s warm and pleasant staff, good wine and appetizing menu has made this pub a favourite hide-out for gastronomes and shoppers in Newington Green. But it is also lovely hub for town guests, visitors and party lovers. With Newton Green spanning across the borders of Islington and Hackney, the Lady is an ideal hideaway for residents or strollers in Stoke Newington, Dalston and Clissold park.
